I am trying to make a part adaptive in the assembly browser, but its greyed out.

I've read previous discussions whereby the following method is meant to resolve the problem:
Go into the part model, locate Tools --> Document Settings --> Modeling Tab --> and uncheck the 'Adaptively used in Assembly' Checkbox.
I have done this but cannot seem to be able to apply it. The setting hasn't changed every time I go back to view it once applied.

Have tried saving the part model after applying change and then restarting inventor. Still no luck.
Any Ideas?

Is this part also being used in another assembly?

Try "save as" or "save and replace" and give the part a different name.

Managed to resolve the issue. It seems the Custom Project I was working in did not allow parts to become active in an assembly. I used the 'Default' Project and it seemed to do the trick. So, it seems there is feature/setting within my Project set-up that was causing the issue. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to advise.
Secondly, can I use a part that I

The other Project file must of pointed to a duplicate of the Adaptive file...

FYI - If a "file" is placed more than once in an assembly "both" or more than one can never be Adaptive at the same time.
...therefore if you want more than one instance of an adaptive part you must ensure the "file" names are not identical.

One file can only be adpative in one assembly. Inventor know if it is adaptive somewhere else and will not allow you to use it twice (greys it out).

OK, so if i want to use a compression spring in 3 assemblies, and the spring's installed length different length in each assembly, how would i best manage that? would i-parts be the way?

I just model the end few coils of the spring (tension or compression) then create an assembly with 2 of the ends constrained along the spring axis.

When I place the spring in an assembly I make it flexible and constrain either end of the spring into its correct position. Done this way the spring can be used in any number of assemblies and in multiple lengths on the same assembly and the BOM calls up the correct quantity.

...model the spring as an assembly...and use flexible.

Interesting solution indeed. Thanks
