I have a problem that I know nothing about, hopefully someone here will have an idea of what to do to resolve it.

This problem is with my parent's computer system. They are in Idaho, I am in California, however I do have access to their system via "gotomypc".

Here's the problem:
My mom and my dad each have their own login into Windows XP. They share one yahoo email account.

When my mom is in her account, she can check her Yahoo mail and everything works fine. Downloading email attachments, etc.

When my dad is in his account and he accesses their email, he cannot download attachments. You can click on the attachment download button and it does nothing. It used to work fine until about a week ago.

Have tried a System Restore back to a point when it worked for him, but that hasn't resolved anything.

Ron,

While I am no PC/IT expert, and I am shooting in the dark here, have you considered his profile may have corrupted. It seems that here in the office if a profile corrupted, setting the computer back made no difference. I know here at the office we have about 1/3 of the employees on Win 7 and the remainder on XP. Often, the XP users will just loose some weird function in a program, and the only way we are able to fix it is with creating a new profile. I know for AutoCAD we have had to do that on multiple stations, mine included, prior to getting a Win 7 Work station.

Thx guys. I guess a new profile can be done w/o a problem, just copy his desktop apps to the new profile once it's created? He mainly plays games.

Did that work? Creating a new profile?

Oh, I forgot to follow up.

Before I could create a new profile, he had "a computer guy" come and take a look. The "Computer guy" ran some software and said "you have a Russian Mafia Virus". So "the computer guy" took the system and returned it in a day or so and charged them $120.

So, I'll never know what the root cause was.

The "Russian Mafia Virus" is the worst one...thank god you didn't have to get wrapped up in that. :-P
