Sean,
Listening to the radio today, there was a segment on Sarasota's mosquito problem and, due to lower revenues they have less money to control the mosquitos. The shortfall was described as $10/year but too politically heated to ask for. Is it possible that people would be unwilling to pay an extra $10 a year? If they got thick here, I would spend a lot more than that a week on some really nasty chemicals, electronic devices and perhaps a flame thrower.

Wow. I had not even heard about this. We made CA radio? Interesting... Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I'd be willing to pay the extra $10/year. Who wouldn't? It's all political. Sarasota politics are some of the dirtiest and meanest around. People will do ANYTHING to get reelected. If someone voted for this (even $10/year for a good cause) their opponent would use it is an example of how they "raised taxes".

Funny enough I have noticed them being too bad lately. Of course I have one of those propane powered Mosquito-Delete-os. Those things WORK!

When I was a kid they used to fly a DC-3 over the neighborhoods to spray. It would strafe the ground at only maybe 300-400 feet. All the neighborhood kids would come out to watch. God only knows what sport of chemicals those things were spraying. I think they still do it in the Everglades and in the middle of the state but have not seen one over populated areas in many many years.

It does show that there are some things that we do pay for that are of value. In the same radio segment, they said that the mosquito abatement was one of the two reasons that allowed the area to grow / real estate boon. I forget what the other was.

When I was a kid they used to come spray our dirt roads with used motor oil and we would follow behind the truck on our bikes, why aren't we all deformed?

I live in a very small town on the Cheasapeake Bay and they will not do any type of spraying here. We are basically just a populated water shed.
Sometimes in the evening you can here the dull hum of the Mosquitos. They don't seem to bother me to much but eat my wife up, diet?
