I'll start this with a question: What would be so terrible about being able to hide sketch dimensions?? I can tell you quite easily what would be great - being able to see your geometry! Clearly, that is. Having recently upgraded to 2010 from 2006, I was hoping to see an option for that, but alas, no. You can hide drawing dimensions, so someone must have thought it would be nice to see an uncluttered view, if only temporarily. If having the sketch dimensions hidden invites errors, why not have them `ghosted', instead - not completely invisible, but also not obliterating all line work. You could have them barely visible, but select one and it could jump out to full visibility while the cursor hovers over it. This would all just be a temporary setting under View, with it all able to go back to the normal rat's nest of black dimensions when necessary.

Would anyone like to weigh in with whether they think this would be a good idea, or a stupid one? I think it would save zooming time, not having to zoom way in to a busy little sketch area so as not to just see a mass of black insects seemingly munching on sketch elements.

Inventor has been able to do this for a long time. Dimension view toggling on a per-sketch basis. I use it all the time with skeletal modeling and hate to think about not having it. Definitely a worthwhile feature IMO.

Because it doesn't fit into Solidworks designed work flow. I've noticed that SW is designed to punish anyone who don't follow their work flow.
How about using sketch blocks? I don't remember seeing tons of dimensions on them.

To pineapple - What would be the difference between a sketch that's a sketch, and a sketch that's a block? If the geometry needs dimensions, it needs dimensions-regardless, right? :) Dimensions are basically just `relations' or `mates' (in SW parlance - or constraints, in IV ), i.e., necessary controls over geometry.

Not having played with IV since way back in its earlier years, I wasn't aware that it has been able to do this for a while, now. That's proof enough for me that it's a good idea (and with SW & IV running so neck & neck close to eachother in terms of which one should a new company choose, it could be a weighing factor, no?)

A sketch that is a block doesn't need dimensions when it is placed or used but does when it is created or edited. The difference between the two is you can reuse a sketch block in multiple locations, whereas a "Sketch" resides at a single fixed space in a part or assembly.

Not possible though its a worthwhile enhancement request. I can think of a few times it would've been handy, but I can't see basing your decision to use the software on it. There are options to toggle dimension visbility in model mode but its related to when you show all the model's dimensions, doesn't work when you're in a sketch, they always show.

Usually if there are that many dimensions, you likely have too much going on in one sketch. Our ex-AutoCad users typically have that problem as they try to drawing too much in one sketch.
