In our new building there are RJ45 (CAT5) outlets all around. They all terminate in a switch room into a patch panel (which looks like a switch or hub).

Problem is nothing is labeled. I need a cheap tool to plug into one end at the outlet (in the room) and then the other in the patch panel (server room) and see which ones match up.

I keep finding tools that can test individual wires but nothing with two plugs (one on each tool).

Would be nice for it to be phone lines as well.

You can use 2 router/hub/switch. Plug the cable into the router port, with power to the router of course. Then plug the cable in switch room into another powered switch/hub. If it lights up, you got the right cable. You can use a netbook/notebook also. As long as there is a cable connection, the switch will have led on for the port.

I got a tool at Home Depot - plug in one module with a battery in it to the RJ45 and then the other half of the tool will "Snif" the signal at the other end of the cable. I used it to label all my cables.

No recollection but if I bought it, it must have been low enough in price.
