Anyone ever run across a bench grinder that has an emergency stop brake integrated? We need use one as a buffing wheel in a robotic application but need to be able to stop the wheel quickly in an emergency. We would always just use a standard AC motor with integral brake but the customer would prefer a standard off the shelf grinder.

I have used injection braking with the GS1 and GS2 drives from automationdirect. It's economical, and definitely effective for what it is, but I wouldn't rely on it for true "emergency" stopping. If you just need a grinder to halt within 1-2 seconds instead of spinning down for 1-2 minutes, then it might be a good option.

Yes, it's not a true estop. Just don't want them spinning for 30-45 seconds. Since it's a buffing wheel (not a blade or grinding wheel) the potential for injury is low but still want it to stop quickly. It's also prett far from the light curtain.

...could you simply align and pivot a pneumatic spring loaded lever (extended as idle) with a brake pad (material?) so that when activated or power/air is lost it would contact the back of the polishing wheel...a sort of power assist braking?

The saw stop is a great idea. But I don't want to ruin a grinder everytime someone trips the light curtain

Steve, we had a similar idea. Just wanted to see if there was an off the shelf solution.
