Nick,
Would this camera work for applications like examining a circuit board for thermal issues/overheating small components. We are looking for a thermal camera to work along with our in house testing of our designs. Currently we place thermocouples on the parts/traces/areas we "feel" should be the hottest. But wanted a thermal camera to take a quick shot to confirm our "educated" placement guesses.
We just started looking and wasn't sure if these "less expensive" cameras could provide enough detail/resolution for smaller parts (like 2" x 4" area or so)

I think it would work well for that.
Resolution is 120 x 120 pixels, so you could measuring down to an area of around 0.040" x 0.040".
It does a great job at showing thermal differences - I was hoping to measure actual temperatures between processes in different plants - there were just too many variables that could not be controlled in each plant to be able to do this though.

You could probably get good actual temperatures as long as the parts were "temperature stable" and they were being checked in the same place to avoid inconsistent reflected thermal radiation.

About the only feature it does not have that the newer models have is "picture in picture" where you can get both a visual and thermal picture at the same time. ( I had no need for this - I would guess that you wouldn't really need it either. )

You can download the spec sheet here: IRC57-B Spec

I would be wiling to let you try it before you buy it if you are interested.
