A long read but....

...Germany is one of the only big countries that has actually tried hard to change its energy mix; on one sunny Saturday in late May, that northern-latitude nation generated nearly half its power from solar panels within its borders.
So, it is possible

"Big" countries... you do realize Germany is about the size of Montana... Distribution is the big issue in the US. When it's NOT sunny how do you make up for the difference?

The article starts with "If the pictures of those towering wildfires in Colorado haven't convinced you..." This right here blows all credibility out the door. The fires in CO are due to the lack of controlled burns the eco nuts have prevented in the 70s and 80s. The underbrush just built up and up and up. The fires would have happened in a cold or a hot environment.

I'm not trying to diminish the need for alt energy (nuke is the way to go) but the agenda is soooo thick...

We had a big influx in solar panel in the past couple years. When the recession hit then the government in Ontario started to subsidize solar panels to whomever put them up. We now have almost every 4th farm with some kind of solar panel system, from freestanding solar tracker units with around 15 panels on them to entire sides of barn rooms with hundreds on. We also have a fair number of the large windmills going up (although albeit a lot of controversy, and now a Government funded study to determine the health effects)

In fact my parents cottage is completely solar powered (while the fridge and stove are propane)

Last summer, we visited those very mountains in CO and noticed the potential and asked. While controlled burns might have helped, the problem was multiple years of drought weakening the trees allowing the bark beetles to infest and destroy the trees. Last week, we went to Tahoe and went to a lecture on the same and the story was reinforced.

A better method is selective logging to open up the forests. We saw that happening in the Tahoe basin. Fires are required for the health of forests and that is happening, even in Colorado. They have been doing that in Yosemite and other national parks for sometime.

Yep. I pout that in the same category as conventional nukes. It's really unlimited power. And the waste disposal problem can be tackled if we really wanted to.
