I heard something on the radio this weekend that made me think.
Apparently Presidential Candidate Rick Perry has stated that he thinks that the Earth is only 10,000 years old. So, I wondered what the percentage of people agree. I know I've brought this topic up before, but I never ran a poll.
I'm most curious to know this based on the fact that this forum supposedly has more technical people than "touchy feely" people (Politicians).
Let me know your thoughts.

I've known quite a few technical people who are "New Earthers". Personally I'm going with science.

Anyone who thinks the Earth is a few thousand years old is clearly wrong. Generally this comes from a literal reading of the bible where they peg creation at 6000 to 10,000 years ago.

I don't know if a god created everything but he/she/it didn't do it a few thousand years ago unless we're the subject of a not so funny joke. In which case we can't trust anything we see, hear, smell, and feel. And if that's the case, we have no choice but to proceed as is.

Technically the Earth and the Moon have been dated to be 4.5 million years old...UNLESS OF COURSE YOU DON'T THINK WE LANDED ON THE MOON...and because they found both to be merely the same age this hold more validity IMHO.

10,000 years really? ...maybe there confusing the fact (most like today's form of) humans have been around that long? ...homo sapiens are dated back to 3.2 million yrs.

I'm a firm believer in Science...and until someone can theorize otherwise I'll chalk this theory out with Noah's Ark!

It is my understanding that our form of humans has been around about 10,000 years and the earth, about 4.5 billion. Any politician that would suggest 10K years proves why [good] education is important and should go get one.

Of course they use interpenetration of words from the Bible to "prove" their theories. It's all hinged on the fact that the word "day" is used through out bible to mean 24 hours. So why would Genesis be different. It has no science behind it at all.

Holy crap Sean, we're actually agreeing on something!

The first time is hard. You'll start agreeing with me more and more now.

Now to complicate things. I firmly believe that both evolution and creationism can co-exist. I believe that Genesis is merely an allegory.

The Earth is probably as old as the rest of the universe. If we believe what our science is telling us now that would make it billions of years old. The Bible doesn't tell us how old the Earth is. It does talk about Earth "ages" but not about the overall age of the Earth. I'm guessing it's is very old.

Actually I take it a bit different. There was no "Adam & Eve". A higher power created the planet and put a clock into motion. That clock is called evolution. That article alludes to a famous theory called the "Nod Problem". According to Genesis Cain & Seth's wives came from the land of Nod. Where did these people come from since God only created 2 people who had 3 kids (one of which is dead).

Even in the models on the page you posted... for these "wives" to be able to mate with Seth & Cain they would have to of evolved enough to be essentially homo sapiens. The explanation just gets too complicated at that point.
