I'm in need of creating a Custom iProperties field within Inventor's iProperties menu (yes, I know all about iProps Wiz and frankly I swear by it...but this place refuses to spend a dime for CAD related software or hardware these days....long, aggrivating story).

So I'm being forced to create new templates and need to have fields such as say "Engineer" with a pull down list of all the Engineers here. So I'm hunting for a way to create a pull down in existing iProperties or custom iProperties field and not finding much.

Any help would be great.
Thanks

Have fun.. BTW you will spend more time/money doing this that you will just buying ipropwiz.
If your company is aware of that (and they aren't asshats) then surely they will allow you to purchase ipropwiz.
But I bet they are so make sure you milk it and spend at least 2 weeks implementing this. :)

make sure you get VB 2008. I couldn't get it to work using 2010.. Of course I have no idea how to use 2008 or 2010 so it was probably just my lack of understanding..

OK, sure I'm biased but Brian is right. You'll spend more time and money trying to do this yourself than buying IPW. I mean it's $80 a seat (at single seat prices). At most places that's the hourly rate of an engineer. So your return on investment is 1 hour. Even if you knew VB and the API like an expert it would take more than a hour to write the code you want (more like multiple days)

Money is not a valid argument for not buying the software. Have your manager contact me and tell me why they are not willing to purchase. I'll convince them.

mcgyvr,

First off, thanks!
Second, yes, I have, in fact, explained and documented the amount of lost time due to lack of updates/low end hardware/etc and costs involved. The actual reply I got: "even if we are at 20% productive, we are still being productive, therefore there is no need to change things".

Yes, that is basically a direct quote. Yes, I am looking for a new place... :x
And yes, as you can tell, they are in fact the type of hat you stated.

Sean,
Their claim is they don't have the funds to spend. They have put most of us on either half time or furlough or flatout layoff. Yet at the same time they have still been having company picnics and off site meetings that are fully catered with open bar and the soon to be held "open house" where they go all out to impress current and potential customers with seafood buffet and open bar....each at a cost of thousands....open house being the biggest.

I've wasted so much breath on things like this, I've given up.
So if you know anyone looking for a designer or a CAD Admin with 30 odd yrs of experience and my own seat of Inventor Pro Ultimate 2012....hit me up.

You need to find a new job. That is foolishly shortsighted management.

What version of Inventor are you using Tyrone. I have a method for you if you are on 2012 that will still look pretty slick without VB programming.

Yup. We could put this in a Multi-Value list pulldown and then use a Form and Event triggering.

Mark,

They are still using 2011 here (I own/use 2012 at home).

Well, I could still write an iLogic rule for 2011 but it wouldn't be as pretty and would have to trigger off whether the data is filled out already or not. If your 2012 migration is a ways away, I would still recommend iPropWiz, you can tell them they don't have the funds to pay for iPropWiz, then they don't have the funds for you to try an figure out an automated way to do the templates without the users still screwing something up.

Simple ROI.
Your time = X
iPropWix = Y
If X > Y and they still don't buy it, then they are not reasonable people

Yep, I've done just that....and not for this instance either.
I've proven to them (management) that their current processes are 10 times more time consuming as opposed to simply updating and using the proper tools or the tools available....like Vault Workgroups as opposed to no Vault at all or as it is, some using Vault, others not, etc.
The reply always comes back the same.....our current process works, no need to change.

You need to get out of there before the rest of your life is destroyed. Before you know it you will be posting in the No Whining Forum worrying about things that would not otherwise affect you.
