This is closest desk I have seen to what I am looking for. I think the frame could be built a little better, but the shape of the glass is along the lines I am looking for. Have a look at the link I posted, if you hover over the photo you get a blown up view. The glass isn't thru fastened to the legs. It appears that there is a bore in the underside of the glass and the legs are kind of press fit into the bores.

For something like that I would consider using a clear epoxy and glueing a spud to the bottom side of the glass that would then fit into holes in the supports. All you need is something to keep it from sliding, weight of the glass and the monitor would keep it on top of the supports and not flying off in a stiff breaze.

I'm tempted to just buy the desk I linked to (and I still might). The one thing I don't like about it is that you can stretch your legs out when sitting in the chair. The leg setup still makes me nervous. I know I'd end up hitting one of the legs too hard and knocking it out from under the desk. I would think at least 1 cross support would be needed to tie the legs together.

yeah, that desk looks flimsy and restrictive to me.

Guess my original reply got lost in the crash...

That desk which you link to does look flimsy due to those legs, not to mention that it looks very restrictive in terms of workspace.

I spent a little time this afternoon working on a base concept for this desk. Here is the base shape and style I am looking for. I might just build one to make sure I like it, but I have a couple of other variations in mind too. One would have a tube and glass "hutch above the table top. Another variation could have some glass shelving and a spot for a desktop under the desk.

I really like corner desks. They don't take up a lot of room, but they can give you some good work space. The way I have the frame designed right now would require some welding. Not a huge deal, but it would be cool to do it with as little welding as possible I think. It should also handle being taken apart and moved pretty well. Most of it should be pretty cheap with the exeption of the glass. I'm not sure what that will cost.

I should also mention that all I really plan to put on the first one that I build is one of the new 22" iMacs and some speakers. Not a lot of weight will be placed on it. From the wall to the edge of the desk is about 36" each way, and at the widest point of the glass it is about 48". The glass is about 24" deep from the back to the front curved part. I tried to make it just under the maximum size that most online vendors that I looked at could cut.

kellings,

What's the space you've got between the two front legs? If you haven't already thought about it, you might just want to make sure you leave enough there to rotate a chair around and not hit your knees on the table legs. We recently got some IKEA stuff at work and the corner units are pretty cramped. If you try to use their recommended under-desk CPU hanger, and put a drawer or file cabinet on the other side, it's very hard to swing out without bumping your knees. I used to have Mayline-Hamilton corner furniture that used a "T" shaped leg with a long base (more like a capital "I" I guess, but the base was longer than the top) on each side of the corner. That had plenty of room to swing your knees through. In fact, it connected to a desk on one side and swinging from the corner to the desk was no problem through the open space in front of the leg.

My corner desk at home has a file cabinet on one side and a cabinet on the other with 30" in between. I have no problems getting in and out of that space, but depending on how tall a person is, it might not be enough.

spot for a desktop under the desk

Somehow, that sounds wrong.

As it sits in that picture, it is right about 25". I agree with you. That is one of the areas that I thought about widening out a little. I wish I could find someone that could CNC the glass at a wider width. I wouldn't mind a little more depth, but I think I can live the approximate 24" that I have.

Yep, desktop under a desk does sound pretty silly.

You could think about changing the shape of those front legs. They need to provide support at the same top and bottom locations, but the middle gets in the way of your knees. If you change the shape from vertical to "C" shaped (I know, harder to make then) or move the vertical support back and put in horizontal top and bottom members, that would give you the clearance you need. The two images show the way IKEA does it and the Mayline-Hamilton corner I use to have. Both give you plenty of room to swing a chair around, but the IKEA stuff, because one side of the corner is shallower than the other, means that anything placed next to the leg on the shallow side will be in the way.

You're leg design idea is an interesting one and I could see how it would give me a lot more leg room. That will probably be one of the variations I try out. It wouldn't be that difficult to build it that way either.

Thanks,

Kevin
